Learning Chinese in Egypt
Chinese is a sought-after skill in Egypt as Chinese companies grow in the industrial cities and the Suez Canal Economic Zone. It is taught in Chinese departments at several Egyptian universities, at Confucius Institutes, in private centres and online.
Where to start
- Pinyin, the romanised pronunciation system.
- The four tones, from day one.
- High-frequency characters and components.
- Everyday and workplace phrases.
Teacher or course?
A native Chinese teacher gives you pronunciation and culture; an Egyptian teacher who learned Chinese can explain grammar in Arabic and knows what Arabic speakers find hard. Many learners combine both. Choose courses by goal: workplace Chinese, HSK preparation, or trade vocabulary.
HSK
HSK is the official proficiency test, required by Chinese universities and many scholarships and used by employers. Tests are held at authorised centres in Egypt, including some Confucius Institutes; check current dates with the centres.
Learning for the workplace
If your goal is a job with a Chinese company, focus early on numbers, dates, measurements, factory and office vocabulary, and polite workplace phrases. Practise listening to real speech, not just textbook dialogues. Employers value people who can communicate clearly in short sentences more than perfect written Chinese.
A simple weekly routine
- Twenty minutes a day beats three hours once a week.
- Read aloud and record yourself.
- Put five new words into sentences about your own life every day.
- Have at least one conversation a week with a native speaker or with Tianle.
- Review at the weekend before starting new material.
