Paying Chinese suppliers safely
Payment is the riskiest moment in importing. Many buyers negotiate the product carefully and then relax on payment terms. Outgoing transfers from Egypt also follow bank and regulatory rules, so always start by asking your bank what is currently required.
Common methods
- Bank transfer: often a deposit, with the balance before shipment or against copies of documents.
- Letter of credit: protection for both sides through banks; suits larger deals but demands precise documents.
- Platform protection on trade marketplaces: funds held until delivery is confirmed, under platform terms.
Beware "our bank account changed"
A classic fraud is an email that looks like the supplier announcing new bank details. Never pay a new account before confirming by phone on a number you already know, and make sure the beneficiary is the contracted company, not an individual.
Tie payments to milestones
Link payments to verifiable steps: sample approval, pre-shipment inspection, shipping documents. Write it into the contract in languages both sides read.
